As a Dental Assistant, what to expect

In the United States of America, today, I will be sharing information about dental assistants. Several people kindly request me to DM them what they need to do to become a dental assistant here because that could be one of the first things they do before joining a dental school. That is what I did when I moved here I worked as a dental assistant for some time. Hence I’m going to enlighten you today on the steps you have to take to become a dental assistant immediately after this. Let us take a brief look into dental assistant jobs.

A brief look into what it takes to be a dental assistant

When I came here for quite a very long time, the first job that I took was as a dental assistant. Well, the first thing I did since I did not have a work permit was to write my exams. When I had not yet been issued with the work permit, I was preparing for the examinations. I cleared the National Board Dental Exam and other exams. Indeed, while waiting for a work permit, I began job hunting seriously. That is something that I did not need to struggle so much for because there was one waiting for me already. On the next day after I received my work permit I began working at my workplace with the position of the orthodontic assistant. That was a long time ago. That is quite correct for a majority of people who immigrate here in this country.

So,

Before entering dental school, they have to work as dental assistants and if you are in Florida you might become a dental hygienist which is not too bad. A very few lucky ones might work as limited licensed dentists in Massachusetts. I know quite a few people who have done that. It’s a great option I’ll discuss ways by which one can become a dental assistant here in the United States and this is something you can do as you apply for dental school. It helps you to earn a little too of money and most of all you get to enhance your curriculum for your application. Not everybody moving here knows about the dental systems in the United States.

Not everybody speaks English that well and not everybody has a strong background in dentistry. Being a dental assistant it helps in so many different ways that it’s my recommendation that you should at least consider it. I hear about a lot of people who go to different jobs because of whatever reasons and they’re not assisting in a dental office and I think that’s a big waste of time. So, I was a dental assistant throughout the whole process. I stopped working about maybe a week before my school started something like that. It’s a very important job that you can do but people don’t know how they can become an assistant here. So I’m going to tell you. Let us discuss more about dental assistant jobs.

First Step: Obtaining a Work Permit

First of all, one has to have a work permit for instance. As much as most employers require a work permit, how would you go about getting one? It’s going to vary a lot. That is why a work permit can be received in many different ways.

As far as I am aware you do need a work permit. And although I do not know much about the different types of visas. There are, and what they allow a foreigner to do in a particular country, I do know that for you to be able to work in this country you need a work permit. I have people contacting me saying “Hey I am great at speaking English well I’ve been doing orthodontics for 10 years can I work in your office?” My first question is “Do you have a work permit?” They say no or they say “What is a work permit?” which means no they don’t have one. So I say “No you cannot work in my office.” What one must have is a work permit.

As for the work permit that you are going to get it will be up to you. I know people who got it through a green card like I did. I got my green card and then my work permit. The work permit came before the green card. I know people who have visas that allow them to work. A variety of visas permit them to work and different work visas enable them to work. As to what that is you will require a work permit to admit you into the allowable working force in the United States.

First Thing

Depending on the conditions you arrive here as a student you may be forbidden to work. You might be here on a student visa. But you may not be allowed to work so carry a work permit if you have one. That’s the first thing to get a dental assistant job.

Special Considerations Common to All States that Apply to Dental Assistant Training

The second thing you have to get familiar with is the laws of the state you’re residing in. Some of the states and I do not know the policies of every state. But some of them will allow you to work as a dental assistant without any extra training while others will force you to go back to school to get a certain certificate to work there. Some states are different than other states, so that’s what, you have to know. What are the rules in the state you live in, that’s important for you to know. I would say that the majority of states will allow you to work without having a specific dental assistant certificate but double-check that information wherever you live to get dental assistant jobs.

Dental Assistant Training

The Importance of Certifications: X-ray and CPR

Then the third thing is, that this is not necessary for you to succeed as a dental assistant, but it’s going to contribute to your getting a job. The third something is for you to go and be X-ray certified and CPR certified but especially X-ray certified. Why is that? You can work at countless numbers of offices as a dental assistant but if you’re not X-ray certified you cannot take X-rays and that’s a major aspect of what you do.

If you are barred from taking x-rays then you cannot give what is expected of you fully. So if you are applying for a job and you already have the x-ray certificate in that state you’re allowed to take x-rays that going to be more likely for an employer to look at you as an applicant and be like “Great this person is ready to go.” And this is something that I’d like to recommend strongly that you do. The other thing is CPR because it is another quest that all the staff in the office, most of the people that work in the office have a CPR certificate.

Therefore, the two things are huge for you to get a job. Although this doesn’t necessarily imply that you will not be hired without them, it just makes it easier for an employer to employ you, especially the certificate in x-ray as that costs a good amount of money. If you don’t have that you’re going to have to get that while staying in the office. These are the main certificates that I say are important for you to obtain before getting the job. This is necessary to get dental assistant jobs.

Additional Certifications: Coronal Polishing

If you want to add a third certificate this third certificate might be more challenging for you to get because many times it requires you to work for a certain amount of time before you apply for this certificate it’s called the coronal polishing certificate. But like I said you might not be able to get this certificate right away you may have to do some hours of work prior. The coronal polishing certificate would be a third certificate that will help you land a job as a dental assistant. In order of importance, the x-ray certificate and the coronal polishing certificate would be the third one.

The reason why it’s the third one is because sometimes you have to have working hours. Before applying for this exam where you can get the certificate. I’m basing these things more on North Carolina rules because I live in North Carolina. Each state has its own different rules. In my office in particular I have hired people without the certificates. And paid them to get the certificates while they work with me but during this whole time they were not able to take a single x-ray they were not allowed to do that. It does cost me more money to get this done however I invest in my employees. Not everybody is going to have the same mindset that I do. Especially because somebody can come to work for me for two months and then I pay for all this process and then they leave. It could happen.

Yes, it could happen. So that’s why many people are like “Okay you don’t have the certificates that’s a problem.” Getting a certificate is essential to get dental assistant jobs.

Conclusion: Important Stages for Dental Assistant Training in the U.S

All in all, summing up to work as a dental assistant, you need a work permit. Unless you are to work in any country, and depending on the state where you reside. You may need to pass certain courses. Once you get these two things cleared it’s going to help you a lot. If you get a CPR certificate which is not that expensive and an X-ray certificate which is a little bit more expensive. Those are the things I would recommend if you want to work as a dental assistant.
